The Daily Mail recently carried this news item written by one James Chapman ... Budget doubles for ministers to wine, dine and party The budget for ministers' parties has been quietly increased by 50 per cent - and almost £140,000 spent on an exclusive wine cellar. In the week when the Chancellor promised a Whitehall efficiency drive, official figures suggest Government hospitality is unaffected by the recession. The unit set up to organise wining and dining for ministers and senior civil servants has had its budget increased by 52 per cent from £525,000 to £800,000 for this financial year. The GOS says: As you all know, I'm completely in favour of exposing waste and corruption, and revealing the politicians who set themselves above the rest of us and refuse to be bound by the same constraints as ordinary people. And if any newspaper takes the lead - as the Daily Mail certainly does - in highlighting such abuses, that has to be a good thing. But our cause is not helped when reporters make stupid mistakes. Someone needs to take James Chapman quietly aside, wipe the drool from his mouth and explain to him that doubling something means increasing it by 100%, not 50%.
